music cd, Paraclete Press, 73.03 minutes.
The heraldic voices of brass, bells and organ announce the majesty of Christ -- his human birth as an infant in the stable at Bethlehem, his glorification on the mount of Transfiguration, the descent of his Holy Spirit in tongues of fire. Burnished Bright is a sophisticated and dynamic blend of these sacred instruments. In Burnished Bright, Gabriel V, brass quintet, collaborates with David Chalmers, organist, and Extol handbell choir, to present contemporary works as well as a delightful group of Baroque transcriptions by Purcell, Pachelbel, Bach, and others. Opening and closing the recording are two fanfares written for the Church of the Transfiguration and based on Gregorian chants. Made in the splendid acoustics of the stone Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, Massachusetts, the recording features the large E.M. Skinner organ with is grand and colorful sound.

A wonderful combination of instruments
February 12, 2008
"While I have used and played much music for organ and brass over the years as a minister of music, the combination of Bells with these great instruments caught my eye. I had never encountered this combination.
I bought three copies of the CD, "blind" if you will, with the hope of being excited and inspired. And I was not disappointed.
Some pieces are "standard" fare, not a bad thing. But three composers especially were wonderful, Michael Bedford's "Fantasia on 'Victimae Paschali Laudes" is hauntingly beautiful. It was this ancient tune in my search that brought me to this CD. The fugue alone in this piece is worth the price of the CD. Wonderful writing and composition.
Michael Hale is another gifted composer for this medium, with his "Transfiguration Fanfare", "Veni", (based on the great Gregorian tune Veni Emmanuel) and "Reflections of the Trinity".
Finally and not least of all, Andrew Haig "Apse Fanfare" is pure delight and dancelike in its composition, both to listen to, and I imagine to play.
The playing by the artists is excellent, the quality of sound of the Cd, terrific, and it would be a good addition to anyone's collection of Brass, Organ and now "handbell" collection of music. I'd bought 2 extra CD's for my trumpeters, and they too were as delighted and surprised by what they heard!" Reviewer: Randall Rice
