“God so loved the world…”  So begins what is quite possibly the best-known bit of scripture ever.  Another one that gets a lot of people thinking has in it the phrase, “He did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men.”  Of course, God's purpose in all this is to enable us to be closer to Him!  And there's the rub, for many if not most of us.  We grow pale at the very thought of “sainthood” or “holiness” for ourselves.  While every faithful Christian knows in his head that the way to Christ is Christ Himself, the average Christian often has many other things on his mind and in his heart,  and the truthful Christian also knows that imitating Christ, taking Him at His Word when He says "I am the Way,"  isn’t exactly what one might call a simple walk along the beach. 

One needs a guide.  One wants a companion.  Orthodox and Catholic Christians have always turned to Mary, the Mother of God, and our Mother too, as guide and companion.  She, the first member of the Christ's "church," the very first whole-hearted follower of Christ, is uniquely positioned by God Himself, in the hierarchy of grace, to help us in our journey toward holiness and sainthood, toward full communion of life with Christ.

In her Magnificat, Mary, from all eternity destined to become the Mother of God, sings her praise of God while acknowledging her humility before Him and dependence upon Him.  She has just given up her will into His keeping, this “handmaid” of the Lord.  This "fiat" is her way, and it must become ours, the way of humility and conversion of our will to God’s.  Mary, who traveled that way first, and who brought us thereby into relationship with the Source of that Way, becomes our mentor and guide in our own unique journey into Communion with Christ.  Leaning upon the pillar of her faith, we receive the benefit of her Mother’s love, the wisdom of her maternal counsel, the protection of her fulness of grace, and the constant comfort of her Mother’s care for us.
