Most of the time, in our everyday lives, we move without thinking from one chore to another, finally stopping sometime after sunset to collapse into our favorite chair and zone out. But, every once in a while we hear that still small voice, like the words from Peggy Lee’s song, “Is That All There Is?” The voice seems to whisper something about slowing down, about taking time to meditate, to pray, to -- as strange as it may seem to us -- sit quietly and contemplate. How? Who? And ... why? These are questions we may want to ask of the whispering voice within which reminds us of the power of prayer, the forms of spirituality, the methods of meditation. Often we push this whispering aside with the thought that that sort of thing is reserved for really holy people: ministers, priests, monks and nuns. But, the whispering persists. We are called to be more than we have yet become. Just what that "more" may be and how on earth we are to achieve it is, indeed, even if ever softly spoken, a positively annoyingly persistent question.
Actually, the answer is that a deeper spiritual life is open to all of us, everyone. Any interested person can come to know what spirituality means and how to practice prayer, meditation, and contemplation which is rooted firmly in the ancient traditions of our common Christian faith whether we are Orthodox, Protestant or Catholic. Daily prayer and meditation are the perfect way to fertilize and nuture one’s spiritual life whether it is short daily prayer, lectio divina, recitation of the ancient Jesus Prayer, or some form of Benedictine, Carmelite, Ignatian, or Franciscan meditation or contemplative practice. There are songs and hymns available to listen to while practicing meditation, all of them firmly in the Judeo-Christian tradition, which will enhance your interior spiritual experience as you exercise your spiritual "body," your soul. Whether one is Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox all of these things are necessary and beneficial for a healthy spiritual life. The different types of Christian and Catholic spirituality provide enough variety within orthodox bounds to meet everyone’s needs whether they are children or seniors. Religion is not simply about church on Sunday. It must permeate our lives, and good spiritual health is necessary for more than the health of the soul. It is necessary for all of life, everywhere. What goes on, inside, directly affects what goes on, outside.
The Christian Book Corner offers a wide assortment of spiritual books and music designed to meet the needs of anyone seeking guidance and enlightenment on the path to spiritual health and enrichment. Advent of the HeartAccused of conspiring against the Nazi government, Fr. Alfred Delp was arrested in 1944, tortured, imprisoned, and finally executed on Feb 2, 1945. While in prison, Fr. Delp was able to write the meditations found in this book. His approach to the liturgical season of preparation for Christmas is an "Advent of the Heart" -- a spiritual program, a way of life. He proclaimed that our personal, social and historical circumstances, even suffering, offer us entry into the true Advent, our personal journey toward a meeting and dialogue with God.

Astonishments: Selected Poems of Anna KamienskaKamienska came of age during the horrors of the Nazi occupation of Poland and lived under Communism. These experiences, as well as the sudden death of her husband, led her to engagement with the Bible and the great religious thinkers of the 20th century. Contemplative ProvocationsRather than enjoying a more intimate familiarity with God, the soul advancing in prayer is likely to experience more intensely the concealment of God.
