No doubt you will have heard this saying:  the family that prays together stays together.  In an age when more than fifty percent of marriages end in divorce it would seem that anything which can help a family to stay together would be among the most popular things in the country!  Yet, all across the spectrum of religious belief the evidence is that less and less people young and old are attending church on anything like a regular basis, or taking time for prayer in any form whatsoever.  Many reasons are put forth to try to explain this -- what shall we call it -- loss of a sense of our creatureliness and need of a connection to something beyond...  Whatever the cause, this sad trend certainly exists.  As our culture grows more and more materialistic,  people become less and less interested in such things as spiritual life, the pusuit of holiness, true religious devotion, contemplation, meditation, a robust interior life of prayer.

From the first moment a human being is able to look around and wonder where s/he is, every single one of us experiences a need to “connect”.  We instinctively know at a very deep level that this isn’t all there is, and try though we might, we can neither for long nor very easily neglect that deep wisdom within.  In one form or another we are all on a restless search for Truth and Rest.  This search for what is "missing" leads us to wonder, and wonder leads us to prayer.  Whether one is Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant, the search and its goal are the same: holiness, either in this life or in the next.

There are many means of achieving growth in the spiritual life.  Devotions abound which help the soul to focus on God’s never ending search for His lost sheep, His insistent, gracious, unmeritable, call to us wanderers.  There are many spiritual practices, ways of meditation, contemplative methods, available for people of all ages from children to adults -- women, men, singles, married couples and families.   Whether one is called to active or contemplative prayer, quiet meditation or "out-loud "liturgical prayer as practiced in religious community (and as recommended to us, the laity, by the Second Vatican Council), prayer resources abound which foster growth and development of one’s spiritual life and the abiding awareness that we are not alone.  Reading the Bible, listening to meditative music cds, practicing daily devotions, spending quiet time in the company of like-minded seekers, are all valid means of coming to know, accept, and cooperate with, God’s plans for each of us.

The Christian Book Corner offers at everyday discounted prices a continually growing collection of devotional books, cds, DVDs and other media and publications which will assist and satisfy the serious student of spirituality, the committed seeker after “the face of God”, the beginner and the merely curious looking to learn more about their place in all of this, alike.  We are confident that your presence here is no accident, and that if you will browse our shelves with a listening heart God's Holy Spirit will bring you to a better understanding of the universal call to holiness that every human being experiences within.  .

GodGodA series of Biblical meditations with special emphasis on the hidden core of the Bible, the Name of God. Help My Unbelief!Help My Unbelief!Rooted in the great mystery of God, the Christian life requires a multitude of virtues, the most primary of which is faith. For it is only with faith that one’s mind, will, imagination—indeed one’s entire being—can be directed unequivocally toward God, through Christ. That process is not a quick or an easy one!  Yet the benefits of true faith are not only for one’s own salvation, but also for that of the whole Church.

In the Arms of MaryIn the Arms of Mary

To trust in Love is also to trust in Mary; to allow her to form us, to live in her arms, to experience particular help from her ... in complete harmony with the Marian tradition of the Church, as a specific remedy for that which is difficult or even impossible to overcome on a person's way to union with God.

In the School of the Holy SpiritIn the School of the Holy SpiritNoted author and retreat director Fr. Jacques Philippe explains the rewards of being attentive to the Holy Spirit and provides simple and concrete ways to develop and nurture this inner sensitivity.  In a clear and simple style, he illustrates his points with many examples from modern life.
Interior FreedomInterior FreedomAuthor Jacques Philippe develops a simple but important theme: we gain possession of our interior freedom in exact proportion to our growth in faith, hope, and love. He explains that the dynamism between these three theological virtues is the heart of the spiritual life, and he underlines the key role of the virtue of hope in our inner growth.

Mysteries and Stations in the Manner of IgnatiusMysteries and Stations in the Manner of IgnatiusAs meditations, whose manner resembles the Ignatian technique called composition of place, these poems mine the Mysteries of the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross in order to bring forth a luminous iconography of redemption.  An eye for vivid imagery and an ear for the telling phrase meet here in verse that is as much to be prayed as read.
Mystical Rose, TheMystical Rose, TheFrom the pen of the most renowned Catholic thinker of the nineteenth century comes this explanation of the doctrinal bases of the titles given to Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto: Mystical Rose, House of Gold, Mirror of Justice, Queen of Angels, Tower of Ivory, Singular Vessel of Devotion, Queen of Martyrs, and more.
Poem of the New Creation, APoem of the New Creation, A"In its lyrical intensity, its mastery of literary techniques and artistic structure, so rich in many perceptive allusions to biblical, theological, historical and literary sources, this poem is indeed a "new creation:" at once traditional and original, a fresh revelation of how the dark confusions in mankind's temporal condition can be transfused through the voice of Christian grace and prophecy from its sorrowful tragedy into the joyous comedy of redemption." (Peter J. Stanlis)

The Enclosed GardenThe Enclosed GardenIn the form of poetic meditations on the Old Testament, Peter Milward's literary masterpiece combines the ideal of Paradise in Solomon's The Song of Songs with the magnificent poetic magic of the pleasure-dome in Kubla Khan. As the Biblical setting for the contemplative life, so essential for both religious Jews and Christians, THE ENCLOSED GARDEN provides everything that is seriously lacking in the active secular and materialist life of modern Jewish and Christian society.
The LordThe LordI, who erstwhile took it upon myself to sing of The Enclosed Garden in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and went on to look through her eyes on the mystery of God, now venture to look through the same eyes on the related mystery of The Lord. Mine, I confess, is the effrontery of Dante who in the related garden of his Paradiso beheld the vision of the same Blessed Virgin on the introduction of Bernard, and who went on to glimpse a further vision of the Holy Trinity in the form of a triple rainbow. Mine is also, I further confess, the effrontery of Ignatius who in his Spiritual Exercises begins with his human sinful self before turning to the kingdom of God as the point of departure for his series of meditations on the Gospels, on the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ ... The Radiance of BeingThe Radiance of BeingConversant with Islam, Buddhism, non-dualist traditions, as well as myriad mystical elements and esoteric currents within Christianity, the author builds a brilliant symphonic work whose master theme is the Trinity. To the urgent questions asked—in response to the crises besetting the modern world—about the nature of reality and the meaning of existence, of what it means to be human, Stratford Caldecott puts forward a clear and compelling answer in language accessible to all: Being is radiant because it is a gift, not only from the Trinity, but also within the Trinity itself; and, in the end, the meaning of existence is love.
