A fine example of historical fiction for young readers, this story is set in America's "Gilded Age" when, as the author puts it, the wealthy  -- since there were no Ipads, Itunes, or even TV -- put their time and money into building elaborate mansions by the sea which they called "cottages" and going there to live for a mere few summer months each year.

Kissimmee Parr is the 9 yr old daughter of one such investor and businessman who runs a busy shipping company in New York, thus does not spend much time in Newport at the family's summer "cottage."  This leaves Mrs. Parr free reign at Pristol Hall -- which she uses showcase her wealth and good manners, as well as her fashionable belief in women's rights.  

Kissimmee's big brother Orlando is content to stay out of his mother's way and try not to "break the rules."  Kissimmee, on the other hand, sees no point in following social conventions ...
