Often one’s experience of magazines or periodicals these days is limited to the end caps on the cashier’s aisle at the supermarket, or the rows upon rows of lurid, sensational and slickly produced news, muscle, beauty, fashion, film, fan and home furnishing publications shouting at us from airport bookshops or the racks and rows of mega-bookstores.  And most of these contain little more than advertisements for things you never thought you needed but suddenly find you cannot live without…  There was once a time, and not so long ago at that, when supermarket checkout counters were free of anything but a clerk and a cash register, when newsstands sold newspapers and news magazines.  Bookstores did indeed sell monthlies and quarterlies -- those weighty journals of criticism, politics, short fiction and poetry.  These last are practically unavailable in a public outlet anymore – and many do not exist in print these days; they are either web-only or out of business.   The person interested in keeping up with the best in authentically Christian creative, critical, and meditative writing should not despair of finding it, though.

Here at The Christian Book Corner we hope to support interest in the good Christian and Catholic periodicals, journals of opinion, ideas and commentary on current events, and magazines and journals devoted to new scholarly essays and fascinating short fiction and poetry that still exist in print form.  Our little online bookstore, devoted as it is to spreading the authentic message of Christ as widely as possible and as gently as we can on the turbulent waters of our changing culture, promotes a small but growing collection of such periodicals.  You may not find any of the “top 10” magazines here, ever, but you will, we are confident, continue ever more to find such publications as will satisfy the teacher, the learner, the young and the old with stories, essays, poems and opinion pieces, conservative and classically liberal in turn on our common faith, the meaning and place of religion in our lives.
