Resources for Groups and Programs

The word neophyte is often used in connection with a convert to the Faith.  It comes from two Greek words meaning newly planted, so a neophyte could be looked at in that way, as a new and tender shoot, or a seed.  Directors and teachers of religious education programs, who most often deal with neophytes, have a particularly difficult task because the participants of any given program at all but the most primary levels of religious education tend to enter with at least some exposure to, and some ideas and opinions about, the subject matter.  How to go about the task of presenting the Truth while accommodating differing expectations and desires is, then, an integral part of the director’s or teacher’s task...  Nevertheless, to think of a neophyte as a beginner, an unopened seed, is not at all incorrect -- whatever may have been previously "learned" now may well have to be "un-learned"!   And, frankly, no matter what our age, an honest look at ourselves will reveal the truth that we are all neophytes at one thing or another including our Christian journey.  We are all in some way begin-again Finnegans.  It is this ever-new aspect to the peculiar task of teaching the faith while living it which makes it continually exciting, challenging and fulfilling.

At The Christian Book Corner (t-CBC) we are keenly aware of this dimension in our lives.  It is part of our mission to support the development of our common Christian culture, especially now at a time when so many seem to have dismissed its relevance, with appropriate materials from reputable publishers such as books, video workshops, group discussion manuals, dvds, and music cds which can benefit all of us “neophytes” as we travel toward spiritual and intellectual maturity through life.  Whether as a homeschool or Sunday School classroom teacher, youth group facilitator, adult discussion/sharing group leader, or Religious Education Director, we wish to help equip you with the right tools for the job.  Learning games for youngsters, discussion starters, story outlines, general teaching resources ... our growing supply of products is designed for both learners and their teacher/guides on the way.  The cds, dvds, books and children's activity supplies found in our Groups and Programs Resource Section will help you engage and nurture young and older "neophytes" as they grow in the knowledge and love of Truth.

Beauty for Truth's SakeBeauty for Truth's Sake"Stratford Caldecott provides a remarkable manifesto that restores mystery to its proper place in education. With mystery comes wonder, awe, reverence, beauty, and a sense of discovery. Without these, science and mathematics are sterile, dull, and doomed, and the humanities are impossible. Caldecott has pronounced a blessing for our children and our children's children." --Scott Hahn

Called to LifeCalled to LifeA complete and fulfilled life is much more assured when we stop trying to chart our own course, when we realize that we are essentially creatures called by God. In Called To Life Fr. Jacques Philippe describes how such "calls" take place: the events of life, the Word of God in Scripture, and interior motions of the Holy Spirit.
Cause of JoyCause of JoyIt has been said that the "South" is not a really a place, but instead, a state of mind. Ellison Turner's book of poems, although not about the "South," nevertheless is rimed with sentiments from his southern roots. In this small tome, Turner has revealed bits of his life's journey; part subtle, part direct, yet totally honest.  Life - sometimes painful, often disappointing, rewarding and fulfilling, but in the end, like Turner's title, a "Cause of Joy."
Charles Dickens: The Last of the Great MenCharles Dickens: The Last of the Great MenChesterton wrote this literary biography as a defense of, homage to, and hospitable criticism of Charles Dickens. As with almost everything he wrote, CHARLES DICKENS: THE LAST OF THE GREAT MEN bursts with brilliant, tangential musings on all things.

DemonsDemonsA small circle of revolutionaries, dissatisfied with the present state of provincial Russia and the wider world, place their faith in radical political theologies with hopes that the structures of society and being can be changed. Dostoevsky's theological anxieties become strikingly manifest in this particular novel, and DEMONS gains profundity because the novelist does not choose to combat nihilism by fleeing from it, but, rather, by giving it full narrative expression.

Wade decision -- presents true challenges for young people who are trying to live chastely. No Longer a StrayNo Longer a StrayOne reader writes:  A pup for Jesus? This really caught my attention. I read it to my first graders for our Lenten Reading in class. They loved it. The compassion in the little one's heart at the Way of the Cross chapter was remarkable. This was their favorite book to listen to. They talk about Pup, Pup all the time. When they hear something in church, they know they heard it first from Pup, Pup.
Paradise in The WastelandParadise in The WastelandVolume 15 in the Wiseblood Classics reprint series, Paradise in The Waste Land is a collection of Nobel Prize winning essayist, publisher, playwright, literary and social critic Thomas Stearns Eliot's early poems and essays.
The BetrothedThe BetrothedSet in 17th century Milan, this famous novel's centripetal force is the simple story of a betrothed couple whose forthcoming wedding is halted by a lusting noble's dubious designs.   Manzoni takes the reader through war, famine, plague, and riot, corrupt prelates and humble priests, as the betrothed young people who have been wrest asunder by a rich man's evil designs thirst for reunification. A panoramic meditation on politics, power, and pain, this novel is above all dramatic proof of love's final triumph -- a triumph that cannot be wrought, in human affairs, without pain.

The Eternal HusbandThe Eternal HusbandAnswering a late-night knock at the door, a man finds himself face to face with the husband of a former lover. But he is stunned by an awful question: does the husband know of the affair? The story's antimony is embodied in the eternal husband's conflict with the eternal lover. These two rivals, these deep enemies, are paradoxically similar. Unable to tolerate one another, neither can they do without one another. This is in part because the wife is dead, the object desired has disappeared, and the rival remains.  However, we soon find that “the most monstrous monster is the monster with noble feelings...”

The Radiance of BeingThe Radiance of BeingConversant with Islam, Buddhism, non-dualist traditions, as well as myriad mystical elements and esoteric currents within Christianity, the author builds a brilliant symphonic work whose master theme is the Trinity. To the urgent questions asked—in response to the crises besetting the modern world—about the nature of reality and the meaning of existence, of what it means to be human, Stratford Caldecott puts forward a clear and compelling answer in language accessible to all: Being is radiant because it is a gift, not only from the Trinity, but also within the Trinity itself; and, in the end, the meaning of existence is love.
